Old School Friday: Singers Turned Actors/Actors Turned Singers...

Its OSF y'all and I must say, I let the holiday last week lead me astray.  And have mercy, it was one of the most important posts too!!!  A tribute to the one most musically high - Stevie Wonder.  So we all know I am going to have to do an entry in ode to his glorious self.  And on another quick note, CONGRATULATIONS to all of the amazing and talented artists that I absolutely adore who are nominated for a Grammy: Eric Benet, Jazmine Sullivan, Boyz II Men, Anthony David & India.Arie, Raphael Saadiq, Stevie Wonder and CJ Hilton, Wayne Brady, Al Green & Anthony Hamilton, Kenna, Maiysha, Chrisette Michelle, Janelle Monae, Wayna & Kokayi, Ne-Yo, Coldplay, Adele, Duffy, Radiohead, Beck, Gnarls Barkley, John Mayer, Nathalie Cole, Daft Punk, Eagles, Gerald Albright, Marcus Miller, Estelle, Pink and anything touched by Jay - Z.  Now if that listing did not give you an inkling of my musical spread, I don't know what will.  :)

Alright, now back to the lecture at hand.  Today's OSF is singers that turned actors/actors turned singers.  Of course, all of the horrible examples are the ones that play on the cinema screen in the back of my mind (thanks Mrs. Grapevine!).  Mariah Carey and Terrance Howard are right there at the top.  I am even tempted to put Jamie Foxx on that list, but his Golden Statue prohibits me.  If he would stop with the booty shit, we would have a winner all around.  However, these two below are examples of how things are done right.

First up: The Diva representing for singer turned actor - Ms. Diana Ross.  Mahogany, The Supremes, The Wiz, Lady Sings The Blues - Ms. Ross did the damn thing.  My favorite song from this woman,  the Theme from Mahogany.

And secondly, my actor turned singer goes to Tisha Campbell.  Yes, I went THERE.  I loved this woman.  We all know she was that chick in House Party and who can forget her as Gina.  But back in the day, when my girl dropped "Push" and "Love Me Down," Tisha gained a fan in me. Like her best friend Tichina Arnold, both can B-L-O-W.  Not to mention Tisha knew her way around a dance floor like it was nobody's business.  Friday Night Videos killed out both songs and I loved every minute of it.  I didn't know which one to post, so here are both "Push" and "Love Me Down."

Have a good weekend y'all...

Okay, get out of my head! I almost posted Diana Ross. Lawd I went from Diana to Little Tevin Campbell to my final choice. LOL! All over the place. Diana is THE ultimate singer turned actress.

You threw me with that Tisha! Ok, I'll go there with you.

Now, now. I liked Jamie's albums. This upcoming one though has already got my side eye a twitchin.

Happy OSF!

Mahogony is one of Boss Ross' best songs. I think Tisha Campbell's talent is underappreciated.

Happy OSF.

I also posted Diana, but by far Tisha Campbell is an original choice. I completely forgot that she took her voice off the set & into the studio.

@Ms. Thang: Diana was definitely my first choice. In my head since yesterday and I couldn't shake her at all.

LOL Tisha was that ish girl, like Hagar said - she is very under appreciated and it's too bad.

@Hagar's Daughter: I agree with you about the under appreciated comment. Her and Tichina ("Don't Ask My Neighbor"???) both do not play.

@Shae: Diana is THE ultimate isn't she? And thank you re Tisha. :)

You know I'm a big Diana Ross fan, so that needs no introduction. I love Tisha Campbell as an actress. When I was a boy, I loved "Push," I used to do the running man to it, rat tail on my head and all.-QH

@QH:Oh I know that hun. Wasn't "Push" fun? I stole all the moves from her vids...lol I can't lie!

You are so right on with Tisha Campbell. She tries to kill it on all her shows too...forget School Daze (i lie, im a big ol spike fan) and Martin, remember Lil Shop of Horrors. She and Pam-excuse me, Tichina Arnold- worked it out with Honey I Shrunk the Kids dude, singing "little shop, little shop of horrors, owww wow wow wow wow). They tried to Brandy her on My Wife and Kids and play like she wasn't that great. There was an episode where she and Vivica Fox were having a sing off. I thought more people would have chosen her, so I went off the wall with Jason Weaver. I salute you.

This also makes me more interested in watching Rita Rocks. I mean it is about a rock band, they're going to have to let her sing.

@Kim: Yup, you are soooo right. My gosh, how can I forget Little Shop of Horrors??? I loved that movie! Jokes, wow you brought me back...LOL Her and Tichina were a force!

Why thank you so much for the salute - much appreciated!!

I think Diana is the winner. I can't believe I didn't chose her, in my opinion, she's a better actress than singer. You chose my favorite Diana song from the movie Mahogany.

Tisha has a really great voice, this is an example of bad marketing. It's not her fault, I blame the publicist and AR Rep for this mess. They tried to add way too much sex appeal.

The second video is better, but her voice is better than these songs.

Great choices! Diana is classic! I was never a fan of Tisha Campbell, but she was doing her thing, you can't knock her hustle!

I checked out some Tisha Campbell...I totally forgot that girl can BLOW!!!

The Boss reigns!! Great choice!

@Mrs Grapevine: Hands down, I think Ms. Diana holds the crown. The woman is The Diva.

I guess it was the time. Back then, we weren't to involved with sex appeal like we are today. It didn't have any bearing on me at all, however you do have a valid point.

@Regina: Thanks!

@Marv: Yes, the woman could sing her ass off! What a shame. :(

Thanks lady!

Ms. Cambell was actually in the film version of "Little Shop of Horrors." I believe she was just out of high school when she got the part. Hope she gets back into singing. She's really very good.

Of course Diana is the quintessential Diva.

@Cres: Yes indeed, Ms Campbell was great. :)
And yes, there are no words for Diana. One of the greats.
