Old School Friday: Graduating In The 90's!

I must say I was pretty excited when I read the topic this week for Old School Friday.  Especially since I have been away for the previous two, but I am back and ready to kick it old school.  The theme this week: music from the year we graduated high school.  FAB.U.LOUS.

1992 was a time of awareness, it brought to the forefront a disturbing time in history that will never be forgotten - the riots and Rodney King beatings.  I think Mother Nature started to show her true colors and the shift in the world with the most dangerous and costliest hurricane in history - Hurricane Andrew.  My family was in Florida on vacay and had me worried off my ass.  And musically, it was sheer bliss.  Now most of you already know I am an old school head and love me some 90's music.  The dances were unconventional, the clothing was engaging (looking back) and the music...I can write a very long rant on the music.  It was just phenomenal across the board (except of course, for the wretch inducing "Achy Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus), it was a good time all around.

There are sooo many goodies to choose from, I honestly don't know where to begin.  I have been sitting here for about half an hour now, Tweeting and trying to make up my mind which gems to choose.  I had to be a bit extra today and post 4 choices.

I HAD to go with the King of Pop on the first selection.  It has graced these pages already, but it is one of my favorite tracks and it was accompanied by a phenomenal video:

I am not the biggest Mariah Carey fan, but you cannot contest the fact that she can saaaang and does have some great tracks in her discography.  She tackled this cover and claimed it.

The Queen of Hip Hop Soul released the classic "What's The 411," need I say anymore?

And my last one, I had to hip hop it up a bit - one, two, three and to the four...

I feel like I am deserting the rest of my babies!!  Hope you enjoyed!

Please check out the rest of the OSF participants here.

See y'all soon...

Great picks! Back when Mariah actually sang without all the theatrics!
And Mary, Mary, Mary ...needs no more words!
Have a great weekend!

@Thanks Regina! Yes, it was just Mariah and the music.

People don't really give the 90's credit for producing some of the best music, but I think your post proves the 90's as a decade of classics. Happy OSF!

@Prof: I totally agree!!

Thanks and to you too!

You have definitely raised the bar! OSF participants will definitely have to step up their game! I love the entire package.

@Revvy: Thank you! What do you do when there is an abyss of amazing tracks to choose from? There is not enough time or space...lol

Happy OSF! Great choices. Mariah showed off her skillz, however, the song still belongs to Michael Jackson in my view. Mary J Blige was establishing her legacy in 1992 and this song moved her well ahead of the pack!

I invite your blog readers to check out my tribute to Bootsy Collins and Parliament Funkadelic. I graduated from high school in 1976 when Bootsy's Rubber Band and the George Clinton's P-Funk were at the height of their powers. Back then we didn't have television videos, so the musical talent needed to be creative with their visuals on top of having excellent music. Did you ever attend a funk-music concert back in the day?

peace, Villager

@Villager: Oh FOR SURE, it will always be Michael's. I can never take that away from my man. Mariah is very "out on a limb" for me and this is one of my favorite songs from her. :)

Hmmm funk-music concert ever attended back in the day - I would have to say as I was a late bloomer attending shows. However I did see EW&F last year and all I was missing was Maurice White, but it was a hell of a funky good time. :)

Man, I loved the Remember The Time video you posted! Michael, Eddie and flashy Hollywood style Egyptian motif - rocks the pyramids, baby!

Hey Connoisseur!

These are some great pics, and I especially like the range of stuff you've got. From Michael to Mary to rap royalty. You do OSF right!

@Ms Diva: Even though everyone was stuck on that stiff kiss he gave Iman, that video's choreography and hey, Michael being Michael - was just madness.

@Keith: Thanks dahllin! :)

Ooooh, that was a good year. That 411 album was the bomb. I know I wore the CD out. It was probably one of my first CDs.

Snoop Dogg and Dre bring back so many memories. I was addicted to rap after that album.

I remember how crazy we thought the MJ video was.

Yeah...this was back when I LOVED Mariah...before she became the boobs she bought!

And when my love affair with Mary began...and when I started liking tall dudes with sleepy eyes (before I knew what those sleepy eyes meant)...

Great choices!

After Snoop & Dre dropped this album I heard senior citizens talking about 'chill to the next episode' and saying stuff like "got my mind on my money and my money on my mind."

Nice range of music.

Great choices! My sister was in hs at this time and I remember jamming with her to each of these songs and singing my little 6 year old heart out as if I understood.

Really everytime that Michael Jackson video came on in our cable-less house it became a family event.

@Mrs Grapevine: It was a time of really good music, we just couldn't go wrong could we?

@Marv: Yes girl - the boobs, the clothing started to get too small and the ego too big. UGH. Thanks!

@Hagar: Too funny, I just remembered the first time I heard my Dad say that to me - I cracked the hell up!

@Kim: You were trained well! I did that to my little sis too. :) And our family event Michael Jackson vid was Thriller. To this day, I am still scared damnit...lol

I really am not a Mariah fan, but...Absolutely love Mary J. Blige, her albums speak truth and Snoop & Dre ...just love them...I love rap and hip hop...call me crazy!

Tha Connoisseur said...

@LaKeshia: You and I both re Mariah Carey, but there are some songs that do stand alone. I love rap and hip hop too, but I am just very picky with the choices given now a days. :)
